The Challenge
Inconsistent classroom management, behaviors and discipline across teachers.
The Solution
Implementation of PBIS systems school wide.
The Results
Common expectations and equitable systems were created to provide a more consistent, predictable and safe learning environment for staff, students and families.
KOI Education helped Rio Vista come together as a community to form a PBIS leadership team and create school-wide expectations. With consistent agreed-upon expectations came the plan for a teaching and lesson plan system and an accountability system for equitable discipline. The consistent school-wide language, practices, and process for improving student behavior brought the school staff together. Working together helped build a positive school culture that is believed in by staff and students. Parents love it because students are achieving success and receiving additional support when needed.
"PBIS at our school has really enabled us to come together and build a positive system and attitude for the betterment of all of our students, together. Providing a positive and predictable environment for our staff and students is what motivates us all to shape behavior and help our students progress, which is what we're here to do!”
– Marlene Bennison, Assistant Principal
The Challenge
Safety concerns on the school bus due to student behavior problems.
The Solution
Implement the Positive Bus Safety System (PBSS) for all bus drivers and monitors.
The Results
Decreased the number of bus behavior referrals by 57% in one month.
KOI Education provided training and support to the Laveen Elementary School District transportation department by helping them implement a Positive Bus Safety System (PBSS). We provided initial training to a tranportation leadership team that included administrators and drivers during a 2-day workshop prior to the beginning of the school year. Together, we customized the PBSS bus expectations, reinforcement system, and accountability system to be used by all drivers and monitors. At the beginning of the new school year, the transportation team and KOI Education trainers presented PBSS and trained staff during a 4-hour workshop. The workshop included an overview of PBIS, practice using the Bus Expectations and lesson plans to teach students, practice handing out positive bus tickets to students meeting expectations, and using case studies to learn to hold students accountable consistently by completing a bus referrals. With the support of KOI Education, the transportation Supervisor has since conducted additional trainings for the staff and is an active member of the district-wide PBIS Team presenting data regularly to improve school climate and community relations.
“We are teaching students the skills they need to be successful in life.”

The Challenge
Multiple behavior and discipline systems in each school causing confusion for staff, students and families.
The Solution
Implement sustainable PBIS systems and policies in all schools in a growing district and city.
The Results
91-100% fidelity scores at all schools in first year of PBIS implementation.
In a community with high expectations of school administrators, educators and students, success is expected. The entire district, including a strong district team led by the superintendents, partnered with KOI Education to launch a multi-year sustainable PBIS initative. Through guidance and support from our expert trainers and coaches, input from the school community including all staff and families, district-wide Expectations were discussed and voted on. All of the schools, including a newly-built one, rolled-out their complete PBIS system at the same time. As a result, all staff and students could state the expectations and explain why they received reinforcement. Fidelity assessment, climate surveys, and multiple sources of data are used to ensure every school and every student succeeds at QCUSD.
